Discover one of the most unique residents of our freshwater world! The Chinese crocodile lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus) is a rare, semi-aquatic reptile that looks prehistoric. It’s not a crocodile or a typical lizard; this fascinating creature is the only living member of its entire family, making it a true living treasure for you to uncover.

Native Habitat

In the wild, these lizards are found in the cool, high-altitude rocky streams and lush forests of South China and Northern Vietnam. They prefer to sit and wait for prey, often spending hours perched on overhanging branches above the water. If they feel threatened, they aren’t afraid to take the plunge, diving into the stream to hide underwater for up to 30 minutes!

Diet

To stay fuelled, these lizards enjoy a protein-packed diet of snails, tadpoles, small fish, and insects. They utilise a specialised ambush technique where they stay perfectly still and blend into the moss and bark until a tasty snack wanders too close. Because they spend so much time near the water, they have developed a unique taste for freshwater invertebrates that other lizards might ignore. In the wild, their metabolic rate is relatively slow, which means they prefer to eat hearty meals less frequently to conserve their energy for hunting.

Appearance

Keep your eyes peeled during your visit, as these lizards are famous for their vibrant orange and red undersides, which contrast beautifully with their dark, mossy-green or brown scales, while often vivid, their colours can vary between individuals. They typically grow to about 40cm in length and are easily identified by the two rows of enlarged, keeled scales running down their back and tail.

It is this specific physical trait that gives them their famous crocodile name. Their powerful, almost flat tail acts like a natural rudder, providing a clever adaptation that allows them to navigate through flowing currents with ease.

Conservation Status

The Chinese crocodile lizard is currently classified as Endangered. Their populations are under threat due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. We are committed to raising awareness for these incredible reptiles; you can learn more about how we support global biodiversity on our Conservation Page.

There’s even more to learn about the Chinese crocodile lizard. We’ve put together some of our favourite facts below…

Despite spending a lot of time just hanging out in the trees, these lizards give birth to live young, usually in the water, unlike many other species of lizards.

However, much like other species of lizard, they have a special third eye (parietal eye) on top of their heads that helps them sense light and regulate their body temperature.
