The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) is one of only two primary species of venomous lizards in the world and is instantly recognisable for its striking orange-and-black patterning. This usually slow-moving but fascinating reptile belongs to the lizard group and is best known for its powerful bite, unique venom and calm, secretive nature.

Native Habitat

Gila monsters are native to the hot, dry landscapes of the south-western United States and north-western Mexico. They are most commonly found in desert scrub and rocky foothills, where underground burrows and shaded crevices help them escape the intense daytime heat. To survive in such extreme environments, Gila monsters spend much of their time hidden away, emerging mainly during cooler parts of the day and in the spring breeding season.

Diet

Gila monsters are specialised predators that feed mainly on eggs and young animals, including birds, reptiles and small mammals. Rather than chasing fast-moving prey, they rely on their excellent sense of smell to locate hidden nests and burrows. Because their meals are high in nutrients and energy, Gila monsters do not need to eat very often and can survive for long periods between feeds.

Appearance

Gila monsters are large, heavy-bodied lizards, growing up to around 55cm in length. Their skin is covered in distinctive, bead-like scales and bold black patterns set against bright orange or pink markings. Their thick tail acts as a fat store, helping them survive when food is scarce, while their strong jaws allow them to grip tightly when feeding.

Conservation Status

The Gila monster is currently listed as Near Threatened as well as being protected by CITES. Wild populations are affected by habitat loss, road traffic and illegal collection for the pet trade. Protecting desert habitats and raising awareness of this misunderstood species is vital for its long-term survival. At Blue Planet Aquarium, we’re keen to preserve the natural world and its inhabitants. By joining us at the aquarium and seeing these wonderful animals, you’re helping wildlife conservation around the world.
