Blue Planet Aquarium is launching a spectacular ‘Super Summer of Sharks’ event to mark the 40th anniversary of the film ‘Jaws’.

Visitors will be able to come face to face with several different species of sharks and rays ranging from tiny baby dogfish wriggling in their egg-cases and bizarre-looking guitar sharks to giant three-metre-long sand tiger and nurse sharks.

The award-winning Cheshire Oaks aquarium is home to one of the largest shark collections in Europe and visitors can enjoy close encounters with everything from epaulette sharks and bamboo sharks to bizarre-looking zebra sharks and elegant black tips.

Using a mixture of exhibitions, entertaining talks, diving demonstrations and fun activities, the ‘Summer of Sharks’ aims to dispel many of the popular misconceptions of sharks as mindless man-eaters.

Blue Planet Aquarium’s Phil Jones said: “Despite the negative portrayal of great whites in the film ‘Jaws’ it has definitely helped to raise the profile of these amazing creatures.

“We’re hoping this event will provide new insights into every aspect of these amazing creatures’ lives from unhatched egg-cases to fully grown adults,” he added.

There will be up to 14 daily talks, feeds and shows throughout the summer holidays and the aquarium is also staging a series of special events in July and August.

From July 20th – August 1st and August 9th – 15th there will be ‘Rockpool Rummaging’ where visitors can discover these amazing miniature worlds and the hardy creatures that call them home, from starfish to spider crabs.

‘Amazon Adventure’, which runs from August 2nd – 8th, explores the mysterious freshwater habitats of this precious natural habitat, home to giant pacu and the feared piranha.

From August 16th – 22nd it’s ‘Amazing Africa Week’ highlighting the extraordinary aquatic species living in and around Lake Malawi, including colourful cichlids.

Enjoy the beauty of tropical coral reefs in ‘Caribbean Calypso’ which is on from August 23rd – 30th and there’s a very special guest appearance over the Bank Holiday weekend (August 29th – 31st) as part of the aquarium’s ‘Magical Mermaid Weekend’.
