Here at Blue Planet Aquarium our recognised GCSE work experience placements are very popular with students.
Work experience placements are run from February to the end of October of each year. We are unable to take on students during the school holiday period. Placements run for one week from Monday to Friday between the hours of 10am to 4pm with one hour for lunch. In order to give you our full attention during your placement, we allow 1 student to carry out their placement at a time; therefore if you are requesting to attend a work placement with a friend, then unfortunately this will not be granted. Our places do get booked up pretty quickly and therefore we do recommend you enquiring as far in advance as possible. Please remember that there is a high demand for our valuable work experience placements so if you are successful but unable to complete the placement given then please let us know at the earliest time otherwise you will be taking an opportunity away from someone else.
A work experience placement with Blue Planet Aquarium is varied and very interesting. Being a visitor attraction, we have many multi skilled and experienced staff working for us at Blue Planet Aquarium and there are three things that we can guarantee you will take away with you its lots of variety, an enjoyable and invaluable experience! The skills that you will learn on this placement include;
It may be your wish to gain experience just in one department, and although we do our best to assist you on your way along your chosen career paths, but we also feel it is important that you take away with you a full view of how our business operates and what our staff in different departments are involved in on a day to day basis. Therefore our placements give you the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working in each one of our departments. We try to give you the best possible experience and therefore we place you in the department with the most activity at that time. For example, our visitor services department tends to be busy in the morning welcoming school children into the aquarium on their day trip out, so your time will be spent here meeting and greeting the schools. You will need to be ready with a smile for all our visitors and offer great customer service! At lunch time our restaurant gets busy, so your time will be spent cleaning tables and asking our visitors if they are enjoying their day out. Or you may be needed in our gift shop helping to stock the shelves or serving our customers. Later on in the day you could be in the office assisting our Finance or HR team with their duties or our Marketing team promoting our great attraction with mail shots or leafleting.
At the aquarium you will be working both with the public and the animals in a busy environment and because of this we ask for the following:
