PAIR OF GIANT LEMONS ADD EXTRA
ZEST TO SHARK WEEK EVENT
A pair of newly-arrived lemon sharks are helping Blue Planet Aquarium in Cheshire Oaks celebrate its Fintastic February half term event (February 13th – 21st).
It is hoped the pair, both adult females and measuring more than two-and-a-half-metres in length, will provide potential mates for the aquarium’s resident male Sunrise in the run up to Valentine’s Day.
“As part of our shark-themed Fintastic February event we are inviting visitors to come up with appropriate names for the new arrivals, which each weigh around 150kgs,” said Blue Planet Aquarium’s Phil Jones.
“And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner we’re also hoping the lemon sharks will get in the mood for love.
“They were initially being looked after in our quarantine tank, which is linked to the main 3.8-million-litre Caribbean Reef display.
“Sunrise was definitely able to sense their presence and he showed quite a lot of interest when they were finally released in to the main display,”
“Lemon sharks are extremely powerful and definitely fulfil everyone’s vision of what a true shark should look like. Their arrival has certainly added a little extra zest to the aquarium and we’re looking forward to hearing visitors’ naming suggestions.
“They also mean Europe’s largest collection of sharks just got even bigger!” he added.
Despite their large size and impressive teeth lemon sharks do not pose a major threat to humans. There have only been 10 confirmed unprovoked cases of lemon sharks biting people and none were fatal.
Blue Planet Aquarium’s giant 3.8 million litre Caribbean Reef display is home to one of the biggest collections of shark and rays in Europe.
Among the other species on display are sand tiger sharks, stingrays, nurse sharks, angel sharks, zebra sharks, blacktip reef sharks and guitarfish.
In addition to seeing the new lemon sharks, visitors will also be able to enjoy feature animal encounters in reception, plus diver interaction, fun games for children and a shark themed trail as part of Fintastic February.
Fintastic February runs from Feb 13th – 21st at Blue Planet Aquarium, Longlooms Road, Cheshire Oaks. For more information call 0151 357 8804, visit www.blueplanetaquarium.com or find us on Facebook
